A large part of Northumberland consists of rich agricultural land, any solid rock covered by a thick layer of glacial clays and alluvium. The occasional island of moorland and rough pasture does occur and on these the best outcrops. Most of the rivers pass through deep valleys, or denes, cut when the ice was melting and they were raging torrents. The denes often have crags along them but these are almost always heavily vegetated and composed of poor quality sandstone. From a climbing viewpoint the main focus is on the quality bouldering areas of Shaftoe and Rothley.
